Functional Words First! Academic Words Later!

Updated: Apr 10

Functional Words for Babies

Functional words are essential building blocks of language development for babies. These words help babies communicate their basic wants/needs, emotions, and desires.

Encouraging babies to use functional words not only aids in their language development but also helps them express themselves and interact with others effectively.

What words should you focus on first?

While some words may vary for each child, here are words we love to reinforce with babies:⁣ Want, More, Help, All Done, Mommy, Daddy, Go, Up, Eat, Milk, Yes, No, Eat

To get your toddler to say new words, there are a few key things that are helpful:

  • Read to your toddler regularly.

  • Label objects around the house.

  • Use gestures and actions to accompany words.

  • Repeat new words frequently.

  • Engage in interactive games that involve naming objects.

  • Encourage imitation of sounds and words.

You can also teach your child functional words that they say verbally, or by using signs and gestures! For many little ones, it can take time to be able to verbally say a word. Sign language is one way to help toddlers express themselves, especially with functional words!

Academic words like colors or shapes are less crucial for immediate communication and can be introduced later once a foundation is established.
